Soul Friend collaborative apprenticeship
WTWT Soul Friend is a two year experiential online learning opportunity for those seeking support in the process of personal spiritual formation and skill learning/sharing to be effective as peer spiritual companions for others.
What does Soul Friend mean? Anam Cara, which translates to Soul Friend, is a Gaelic term that touches on a quality of spiritual companionship, guidance and learning - a relationship where one would bring their deepest self, heart and mind and experiences to another in sacred space. A Soul Friend may also be a Community Minister, bringing depth and ceremony into a broader context … from one, to two, to many.
We will work as a cohort, primarily in circle format to explore spiritual tenants including: Presence, Encounter, Beloved Community, Collaboration, Dreaming, Patience, Kindness, Compassion, Agency, Practice, “Naked & Empty”, Pleasure, Open Mindedness, Invitation, Inclusion, Rest, Creativity, Response And Right Relationship, Prophetic Voice, Holy Agitation, and being Agents of Change in these dynamic times.
This is an Inter-spiritual offering, versus Interfaith or specifically faith based.
This pathway does not require a person to arrive with a declared faith walk or identity - and, all walks are welcome.
THis is a formational walk.
Year One: Who Am I? - Year one will be anchored in cultivating/deepening self awareness, spiritual formation (prayer, inquiry, dreaming, inner life, voice, “shimmers and shadows,” spiritual principles, embodiment, etc) and staying keen on opening, unfolding, disrobing/unmasking, descending, playing, awakening to self.
Year Two: Who Are You? - Year two will offer tools and support for beginning to weave from inner and self :: to outer and other. We will actively practice honoring ourselves and others, other than human, eco-chaplaincy, the liminal, grief support, building a practice, and more.

Rev. Meg Vellejos Mccoy
My private practice has developed through earning my BFA at Maine College Of Art, training in healing modalities, chaplaincy training through the Chaplaincy Institute Of Maine, a lifetime of gathering in wisdom circles and many years of study with incredible teachers and elders such as Elder Teacher David Lonebear Sanipass, Kate Joyner, Animas Valley Institute, Sandra Chaussee, The 13 Indigenous Grandmothers, Elder Jackie Major, Christine Valters Paintner, Peggy Brick, and more. In addition, I’ve been in practice for nearly 20 years, and have learned A LOT from being in it beside incredible teachers and soul friends in community.
The call to this work for me is by and large to assist our great re-membering of true friendship and community, collaboratively creating a tone of skilled peer companions and to participate in the re-wiring of spiritual care being a “power with” dynamic, versus “power over”.
Testimonials
Become a presence of presence.
This body of work pairs with all kinds of callings.
Within the very first cohort of Soul Friend we had a lawyer who brought the tone of Soul Friendship into how she companions survivors of domestic abuse, and a youth advocate who skillfully companioned sheltered teens. We also had a Contemplative Artist and a Dharma Dominatrix, both bringing this framework into the care they offer the community.
Soul Friend can pair with what you’re already up to — and, it can be a starting point for folks yearning to turn towards companioning others with integrity and spaciousness as a “presence of presence”.
Skills We’ll focus on developing:
Mirroring/Spiritual Companionship - listening to another’s story without projection or interpretation or fixing. Having ears to hear the shimmers - both dark and glimmering gems within a share and offering voice to those reflections with consent. Being “hearts with ears”.
Practice - creating and/or sustaining regular/daily personal practice(s) that water spirit and body and being.
Voice work in a spiritual direction - We will have an informed and held container for folx to practice sharing thought, sermon, words of change and words of Spirit.
Ceremony - We will have an informed and held container for folx to practice creating and offering ceremonies: wedding, funeral. naming, divorce, grief, etc.
Ethics/navigating conflict/subtle dynamics + right relationship
More to be uncovered.
Additional Benefits:
-
Membership provides opportunity for each participant to receive support from community/circle work and continue to deepen one’s own inner vision, voice and remain watered while stepping into leadership. The themes we will be exploring as a cohort in WTWT SF will be mirrored in our community, and these weekly gatherings will be a wonderful opportunity to practice companionship, leadership, and sharing your voice as a community minister.
